Trump Clashes with Dem Leaders Over Border Security, Says He'll Shut Down the Government Unless Wall is Built
Jordan Kirkland - December 11th, 2018
On Tuesday, President Trump held a open meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over the president's demand to fund a border wall, threatening a government shutdown if he does not get the money he has requested.
The sixteen minute discussion was full of fireworks, with Trump sparring with Schumer and Pelosi over how to implement effective border security, and the looming government shutdown.
The government is set to shutdown on Dec. 21 when funding for agencies is set to expire.
Schumer and Pelosi both said legislation to keep the government open and provide additional border security could pass both houses of Congress, but Trump wouldn't budge, claiming the major wall funding was necessary for border security.
"You say 'my way or we'll shut down the government,'" Schumer said in front of reporters.
"Yes, if we don't get what we want ... I will shut down the government," Trump declared.
Pelosi, trying to serve a mediator, was unable to stop the two from debating the wall.
“This has spiraled downwards,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi and Schumer urged Trump to support a bill that includes a half-dozen government funding bills largely agreed upon by lawmakers, along with a separate measure that funds the Department of Homeland Security at current levels through Sept. 30. The homeland bill includes about $1.3 billion for fencing and other security measures at the border.
President Trump argues with Nancy Pelosi over government funding and potential shutdown.
Pelosi: "I think the American people recognize that we must keep government open ... that we should not have a Trump shutdown."
The argument would reach a crescendo when Schumer said that Trump wanted to shut the government down. Trump fired back, saying, "I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck... I will be the one to shut it down."
